13 June: 21 children imprisoned in Rumbek, southern Sudan

On Wednesday 6 June, primary schools around Rumbek, southern Sudan, went on strike demanding for the payment  of their teachers’ salaries. The children marched to the offices of the Ministry of Education, Finance and Health at the state and destroyed 3 vehicles and other property of unknown value.

 

They were rounded up, 4 were injured and hospitalized and 21 were imprisoned. Save the Children Sweden, UNICEF, and ministry of Social Development are negotiating with the office of the Governor for the release of these children.

 

Latest development: The children have now been released from prison, according to sources in Rumbek, southern Sudan.
